Satisfying customer requirements is the top priority in our rod mill. | ||||
| The rolling process begins with the scheduling of billets from inventory based on our customers' order requirements using computerized expert systems technology. An automated tracking system follows each billet from inventory through the coil stage and records all relevant information on the rolling process. | |||||

The rod mill has made a quantum leap forward in
its plant modernization program. The program, announced in 1996, was
designed to upgrade the rod mill facilities to meet the quality demands of
a diverse customer base with increasingly sophisticated product
requirements. The first phase of this program was completed in 1997 and
involved upgrading the rod cooling and handling facilities to handle
larger coils, as well as providing rolling improvements in the
prefinishing mill area. Ivaco Rolling Mills has just completed the second
phase of this program - the installation and startup of a new reheat
furnace and breakdown mill which have increased the incoming billet
section by 78% and allowed the production of coils weighing up to 2,750
kilograms or about 6,000 pounds.
All of the new equipment has been designed to provide the highest quality possible using the latest technology available. A new computerized walking beam furnace by Combustion has been installed. The furnace capacity is 175 metric tons per hour on a 160mm billet section. It is designed to maximize heat recovery for energy efficiency. The furnace is equipped with eight control zones for maximum control of billet temperature and furnace atmosphere. The furnace is followed by a single strand, four stand, high speed housingless stand breakdown mill. These four stands produce a 105mm round from a 160mm billet through a crop and cobble shear to a two strand, free bar, covered roller table. The roller table feeds stand 2 of the original roughing mill. The furnace and breakdown mill are physically located outside of the original mill. This allowed us to commission the new equipment before shutting down the continuous mill. Startup was accomplished 24 hours ahead of schedule The finished rod, now at a temperature of about 950ºC, enters a new Morgan water box control system after the no-twist mills. This system uses feed forward control which minimizes the length of uncooled ends and maximizes rod temperature control and uniformity. Finally, a new Sundco-H coil compactor was started up during the summer of 1998 to ensure adequate compacting and tying capability for the new mill. During the outage taken to tie in the new furnace and breakdown mill, preparations were made to allow the installation and startup of Morgan rod Tekisun reducing sizing mills without taking any additional mill outages. The preparations involved completion of the foundations for the new equipment and installation of the portion of the equipment base which is located on the rolling line. This preparation will allow the equipment to be installed and tested while the rolling mill is operating. "Tekisun" is a word coined from two Japanese words meaning "optimal size". The installation of these mills will increase Ivaco’s product size range to include 5.0mm rod with tolerances as low as plus or minus 0.1 mm. The reducing sizing mill can use a single roll pass family throughout the rest of the mill. This means that the stock section and speed relationship between mill stands remains constant throughout the entire product range. Another major advantage of the reducing sizing mill to our customers is the free sizing capability. This will allow the production of a range of finished sizes from a single family of grooves in the reducing sizing mill by simply adjusting the roll partings and feed section during billet gap. These changes will result in increasing Ivaco Rolling
Mills’ capabilities to meet the requirements for specific specialty
products, such as tire cord, for our customers. |

| Over the years, mill
output has increased dramatically in quality. The mill has grown to one
which produces 75% of its output in premium products such as cold heading
steels, tire steels, welding steels, and others. Ivaco Rolling Mills is
now one of the largest and most advanced mills in North America devoted
exclusively to the production of hot rolled wire rods. The 21st century - let Ivaco Rolling Mills take you there!
